"A Million Mississippi Reflections"
Just how many lights are there? In reality,
we’re not sure. We know from invoices that we’ve
purchased well over two million lights but we
have not kept track of the one’s that we’ve
discarded----but still—well over 2.2 million are
shining brightly in Riverside Park.
The upkeep and maintenance is a tremendous task.
Numerous volunteer groups assist with this
effort. The most notable being the Friends of
Luther. They gather each January to go through
every string. We’d be lost without them.
We’re smarter about building our displays and
are moving into computer controlled animateds
that require more technology but can create
magnificent lighting options. We are blessed
with local talent and 95% of the animated lights
in the park are from displays that have been
made locally.
For 2007, we’ll have about 160,000 LED lights in
the park. While more expensive to purchase, they
are more durable and use a fraction of the
electricity. We hope to continue to expand using
more LED lights as resources allow. They have a
different glow, perhaps you can spot the LED
lights in the park.
